- To introduce Windows Magazine.
- To introduce the history of the ME conflict, including the role of Europe.
- To map out the ME conflict in order to better understand its complexity.

Associations "Sunshine"
Goal : To discuss global issues associated with 1948 that the students are already aware of, to connect what happened in the ME in 1948 with global occurrences. To think about what was going on in the '40s.
Time : 10 minutes

Goal : To discuss global issues associated with 1948 that the students are already aware of, to connect what happened in the ME in 1948 with global occurrences. To think about what was going on in the '40s.
Time : 10 minutes
Activity :
- The teacher draws a circle in the middle of a sheet of paper and writes the word 1948 in the circle.
- The teacher asks the students to associate freely and say everything that comes to mind when they think about 1948--not necessarily relating to the Middle East.
- The teacher writes what the students say, in the form of a "sunshine' - each phrase is written on a different "ray".
* Comment : if the students don't raise some important events, the teacher may ask some leading questions, such as :
- What was happening in the world during this time ?
- What important events, wars ?
- What happened after World War II ?
- What did the world look like ? (possible answers : refugees, ruins, end of colonialism, countries receive independence, Universal Declaration of Human Rights, etc.)

Aims : Introduction to Windows Magazine as an alternative type of media ; Introduction to the history of the ME conflict, including the role of Europe

Materials : Copies of Issue 27 of Windows, the "Six Questions" sheets

Materials : Copies of Issue 27 of Windows, the "Six Questions" sheets
Activity :
- Students break up into groups of 4-5. Every student receives a copy of Issue 27 of Windows Magazine : 1948 and Us.
- Students are instructed to read together the articles titled "We asked our Grandparents what is their Story" (pp. 18-26), and answer together the following questions :
- Who told the stories in the articles ?
- Do you see differences between Windows and other types of media ?
- What new information can we add to the "Six questions" sheets ?
- The students are invited to add information to the "Six Questions" sheets, and to cross out incorrect information if they come across it.
- Discussion in large group : what is the difference between Windows and other types of media (possible answers : reports different sides of the same story, the voices of different kinds of people are heard, written by youth, written by people from various sectors of society, etc.
Conflict Tree
Goal : To map out the ME conflict in order to try and deal with its complexity and gain deeper understanding.
Time : 35 minutes
Materials : conflict tree sheets, markers, colors.
Activity :
- Write on the trunk of the tree : What is happening nowadays.
- Write on the treetop : What are possible outcomes in the future, plus possible solutions.
Goal : To map out the ME conflict in order to try and deal with its complexity and gain deeper understanding.
Time : 35 minutes
Materials : conflict tree sheets, markers, colors.
Activity :
- The students are divided into new groups of 4-5. Each group receives a large sheet of paper with a drawing of a tree.
- The teacher asks the students to try to map the conflict according to what they have already learned:
- Write on the trunk of the tree : What is happening nowadays.
- Write on the treetop : What are possible outcomes in the future, plus possible solutions.
- Back to the large group, each group presents its tree and the rest of the groups give their feedback and ask questions.
Summary Activity
- The teacher should allow 5-10 minutes at the end of each workshop for a brief summary of the activity, plus time for questions. Questions which don't have a short answer will be written on one of the flipcharts, to be addressed later on.
- The teacher reminds the students that they are invited to write their ideas, questions and new information they learn about the ME on the sheets that will remain hanging in the classroom until the nest workshop.
